Seth on Email

5 06 2008

All I can say is wow. This is a prime example why Seth Godin is the man. He wrote a great piece on permission emailing with loads of fantastic rules for the sender.

My rules are simple if your email is a touching story, selling something, or is some joke i delete them (Dan Buck is the only exception because the jokes he sends are funny, as opposed to the unfunny pictures of cats sleeping on TV’s or otters holding hands.)

Before you send you next email read his post.

Lighter Fare: Top 5 TV.

27 05 2008

I have come across loads of lists in Children’s Pastor Blog Land so I though I would join the fray. The first list was inspired by Pudge Huckaby. A guy who is passionate about reaching kids and likes doing things outside the box (my kind of guy).

He wrote a post last week listing his top five TV shows. I do however respectfully disagree with Pudge that Friends is the best sitcom ever……obviously Seinfeld wins hands-down in my book. I still to this day laugh out loud at almost every episode.

Here are my top 5.

The Office
The Amazing Race

24 (before the writers became drunk with their own success)
In the Line of Duty
The Cosby Show

What are your top 5?

Check it out. Free music legally. Mac fans (me and current blogging buddy soon to be mac fan

The company is called Qtrax. Here is an article about the freeness of it all. Qtrax goes legit with EMI deal

(I had already published this post and came across this. Labels expose Qtrax as hoax.)

I love Hillsong!

2 01 2008

cdhillsongkids_telltheworldI love Hillsong. I am so excited I just got the new Hillsong Kids CD and DVD. I love, love, love it. It is differnt from the other DVD’s they have made (I am not talking about the fact the name doesn’t have super in it anywhere) and I love it even more.

I am so greatful to Dave, Julia and the crew at Hillsong Kids. I am so blown away so often by the level of commitment to excellence, the power of the Holy Spirit and the example All things are possible in children’s ministry.

Every time I get the new Hillsong kids dvd I so want to move to Australia to just be a part of the great things God is doing. The fact we usually have about 2 feet of snow on the ground at the time doesn’t help.

If you work with kids you MUST get the CD and the DVD it can and will help you be more effective, creative and intentional about reaching this Generation for Him.

Hillsong, we are so blessed by what you do. Thank you so very much.

My top 5 favs from this album are:

1. I’m Not Ashamed
2. Lean on You
3. Yours Alone
4. My Number One
5. You’re the Answer

Family Concluded: What makes you feel better?

The Power Of Family.

At the end of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory it adds a few scenes that were not in the orginal movie. For me these last few scenes made the movie so much more powerful than the original movie with Gene Wilder. It really drove home the fact that the four kids and their parents who didn’t make it out of the factory misunderstood one thing. The power of family.

Charlie didn’t have all the things that the other kids had but he had so much more. He had a family that loved him enough to believe in him and give him boundaries to keep him safe.

Family is God’s idea he created it to be a vehicle to demonstrate his power and love. When functioning well it is a shining beacon on a hill. But we must teach our kids self-control, right priorities, we must refrain from giving our kids everything they want while giving them appropriate boundaries and teaching them to respect their elders.

Family is important we must never forget the power of family. We are bombarded daily by so many things that call themselves important but really aren’t. The spouse and/or kids God has given you are your main assignment. You only get one shot. Make the most of it.

Praying for New Life Church

9 12 2007

Tragedy hits home.

newlifechurch.orgMy parents and sister all attend New Life Church. My father missed the events of yesterday by 20 min. One bad thing about the information age is the fact we are bombarded by images and facts that are indescribable on a daily basis. The good thing is that I was able to hear that my family was fine before I knew that tragedy had hit. What happened yesterday was horrible. I have attended New Life quite a few times and it is a wonderful church. The pastors and people I met were all wonderful. They have been through more tragedy in one year than any church should have to face in a lifetime. I am praying for everyone affected, please join with me.

Mike Teavee – No Boundaries

Kids need boundaries they crave them. Kids do not feel safe or loved in an environment where they can do whatever they want. It sounds very loving to embrace you child’s creative desire to do whatever they want. I believe it is cruel. By allowing you kids to do what they want you handicap their future spiritually, morally and financially.

I have seen over the years a vast array of parents whose standards and methods I disagreed with and some I agreed with wholeheartedly. The key to the success in raising kids who have boundaries is CONSISTENCY.

If I could give one action item to parents it would be this come up with your boundaries and rules by which your house functions and be consistent. When I was raised kids were spanked for everything until the age of 13 or 14. I personally don’t agree with spanking kids that are that old I don’t think it accomplishes what you are trying to accomplish. That being said I am not affected by those events because my parents were consistent in their love and correction. Did they make some mistakes, of course, as will I. When you are consistant in your love and correction your kids have a context for any mistakes you may make.

I have friends who spank and friend who don’t. I personally have chosen to use other forms of correction in addition to spanking. No matter what you choose as a form of correction, choose something and be consistent.

Whatever you do be consistent.

Hosea 12:6
What are you waiting for? Return to your God!
Commit yourself in love, in justice!
Wait for your God,
and don’t give up on him—ever!
